Captain Video may also be the the first TV show to be adapted to the big screen. There was a 1951 Serial by Columbia that predates 1954's Foreign Intrigue and Dragnet which are often cited as the first TV to big screen adaptations.

Wow. "Captain Video" is also the only TV series ever adapted as a movie serial. However, it is not the first surrealistic television series (That honor probably goes to "Window on the World", which also aired on DuMont. I haven't seen it, but I have read an account of the show and it sounds very surreal - And it predates "Captain Video" by a few months).

There were actually two 'Captain Video' movie serials. "Captain Video, Master of the Stratosphere" in 1951 and "The Lost Planet" in 1953. Both starred Judd Holdren. Does anyone have these?

To my knowledge, the "Captain Video" serial is still under copyright, unlike the TV series which is long PD. I have seen one of them on Amazon sold on DVD though.

Yes VCI Entertainment has put the first one out on DVD. Their licenced cliffhangers and serial are generally "restored" (ie fairly well remastered). Haven't seen this one so I don't know what the quality is like.
